Pheelig flashes back suddenly on how he'd won the ship, and how Veris had been one of the original crew who liked the former captain. Since then Veris has been a thorn in Pheelig's side in subtle ways. Always being the one to speak out against him to the other men when things went wrong, and always appearing to be planning something.
