Shadow World
Player: David Mac Iver
Background: Dray is a frustrated individual. He is a travelling mage, with his main talent being in illusion. He also practices some conjury and a small smattering of other magics. But what he *really* wants to be is a healer, a talent for which he has demonstrated a complete inability. He has some skill with herbs and mundane healing, but cannot magically heal so much as a scratch.
He grew up in a smallish human farming community. Fairly nondescript and uninteresting. When he was about 12 a nasty bout of disease struck. It didn't kill most people who caught it, mainly the young and the very old, but Dray's younger sister was among those who died from it. The village had an old healer witch-woman who did her best to help people stave off the worst of the illness, but she was overwhelmed by the task and couldn't help everyone.
It was at this point that Dray decided he wanted to be a healer, in order to prevent something like this happening again. He went to the witch-woman and was shortly apprenticed to her. Over the next few years she did her best to teach him, and he did learn some things. He learned herbs and medicines, a variety of charms and cantrips and perhaps most importantly she taught him to read. But she couldn't teach him to heal.
At the age of 15 he left the village, hoping to find someone who could. He's been on the road for about four years now and so far he has searched in vain.
He mostly makes his living from entertaining people. It doesn't pay marvelously, but given his desire to travel and find a teacher he has a limited number of options, and it keeps him fed. He also occasionally performs a few more serious charms of protection, etc. for people, but he's not all that good at them. On top of his skill with illusions he has some fairly decent showmanship and has learned some magic tricks of a rather less arcane nature - sleight of hand, etc.
He frequently practices his magic and tries to figure out new tricks. Whenever he meets a new mage he tries to learn what he can from them. Consequently much of his magic is a hodge-podge of borrowed techniques and half understood methods. Unfortunately none of the healers whom he's met who have had the patience to try have been any more succesful in teaching him what he really wants to know.
