Lady Luck - also known as "The Lady", and by many other references. She probably has an actual name, but no-one uses it for fear of drawing her attention. Very much as described by Terry Pratchett. "Just the Lady, right? Nothing else." Interesting Times: "There was always an argument about whether the newcomer was a goddess at all. Certainly no one ever got anywhere by worshipping her, and she tended to turn up only where she was least expected, such as now. And people who trusted in her seldom survived. Any temples built to her would surely be struck by lightning. Better to juggle axes on a tightrope than say her name. Just call her the waitress in the Last Chance saloon. She was generally referred to as the Lady, and her eyes were green; not as the eyes of humans are green, but emerald green from edge to edge. It was said to be her favorite colour." Terry has her and Fate as enemies. I have them as the same being..... She's the goddess of Luck, obviously, worshipped by gamblers. But she's also the goddess of Fate. Pre-determination, as well as blind chance. These things are opposites - they are therefore the same. And on a less exalted level, she has a taste for practical jokes. Many people make small sacrifices to her at appropriate times, but usually try to avoid her attention. Some - mainly professional gamblers and risk-takers - go so far as to initiate to her. Devotees are vanishingly rare, but there are a few strange souls who serve as priests at her temples, generally philosophising on the nature of Fate and cheating at Tarot cards. The idea that the Lady has now chosen to have a Paladin is either one of her jokes, or very, very serious. It's possible that the Lady is the only being in the universe who knows that this is is a role-playing game. Whether she is an avatar of the GM, or vice-versa, is an interesting question, which, were it possible to ask it, would no doubt be answered with an enigmatic smile.
