  • Chimrea finds a minute to pull Kerem aside from the others. "Hey. Could I talk to you?" She's been avoiding him, a little bit.
  • Kerem eyes her a little uncomfortably, having noticed her avoidance, and withdrawn in his turn, unsure if his perceptions are right. "Uh, yeah, sure. What's up?" He smiles...a little.
  • Chimrea: "I know that you wanted to get out of here after we took Agnes' body to her father. And I think it's mostly my fault that you stayed, along with maybe some of Tez. Am I right?" She has her matter-of-fact questioning face on, but her hands are twisting nervously at the fabric of her skirt.
  • Kerem: "Um. I mean, yeah. I have to...we're in this together, right?"
  • Kerem: "Also, there are a lot of slaves here, apparently."
  • Chimrea: "Yeah, but I've been thinking about it, and I really put you on the spot, besides the whole traveling back across the goblin-strewn wilderness thing." She takes a breath. "What I'm trying to say is that I'm sorry. For... well, all of this, really."
  • Chimrea: "And I've sort of avoided apologizing to you because it would be hard to decide where to stop."
  • Kerem: "I...I'm not...I mean..." Kerem reaches out awkwardly to Chim.
  • Chimrea: "Let me finish." Chimrea holds up a hand. "I know I'm not responsible for all the weird stuff in your life, and I'd be a pretty lousy spirit-talker if I couldn't see you have a destiny around you. But some of the stuff that happens to you is my fault, like you being here. I don't know if you'd ever complain to me about it, because I think you go easy on me. And I just. I don't want to take advantage of you, because you're the best friend I've ever had."
  • Kerem: "Chim." Kerem starts to continue, then stops, thinking.
  • Chimrea: Chimrea's hands stop twisting together, holding absolutely still while he thinks.
  • Kerem: "You're not...I-I..." he bites off a word.
  • Kerem: "...can I...hold you?"
  • Chimrea: "Yes," she says very quietly.
  • Kerem steps forward and takes her carefully in his arms.
  • Kerem: "I love you," he whispers, almost fearfully. "I do. You don't have to worry about taking advantage of me. I want to be with you. I want to take care of you."
  • Chimrea turns her face into the hollow of his neck and slips her arms around him just as carefully, then her grip tightens until she's clinging to him. "That's what scares me," she whispers. "I'm worried that if you keep giving without asking, I'll take too much. Don't you see what I mean?"

  • Kerem breathes a little heavily. "Too much? I don't know...I don't know what that means."
  • Chimrea: "When I became a shaman, part of me wandered off into the dark and never came back. I don't know if I'll be able to find my way out of this High King stuff." She's trying to say that she's afraid she might die. Then she laughs, shakily. "But if it's the end of the world anyway, it doesn't matter, right?"
  • Kerem grips her shoulder. "If you want me to save you, I'll try to save you. If you want us to save the world, then we can try to do that too. Anything you want, I'll try." He slides his hand down her back, turning her face towards his with the other, inches apart. "All you have to do is tell me. What do you want?"
  • Chimrea: "I want to save the world, I want to save my home, I want for my friends to be happy. I want us to be together and for things to always look as bright as they did when I confused you right off the boat. I love you so much it hurts, Kerem."
  • Chimrea: "I'm being stupid, I know," she says, angry at herself, blinking back tears. She bites her lip and then leans up to kiss him, lightly.
  • Kerem: "I love you..." Kerem kisses her back, squeezing her lightly, then turns and exhales frustratedly. "I don't know what to DO. I don't know how to give you what you deserve. I went on this whole stupid heroquest and it didn't help ANYTHING."
  • Kerem: "I'm sorry."
  • Chimrea: "Didn't help anything? Are you crazy? That's not how it works. The act of the journey changes you, and the things that you are have larger echoes." She thumps his shoulder lightly with her fist. "I'm not explaining this well, because I've never met anyone crazy enough to say a spirit journey didn't help."
  • Kerem sighs again. "Yeah, I guess, but. I wanted something NOW. Something besides more damn responsibilities."
  • Chimrea: "I think I might be starting to understand what the key could be used for, but the shape of it is so large that I'm only catching glimpses. But it has to do with Old Man Spider, and the High King, and bargains. Will you trust me, when the time comes?"
  • Kerem: "Yes," he says unhesitatingly (for once).
  • Chimrea: "Thank you," she says, the words not big enough for everything she wants to say, but hopes he understands. "You are so rare, Kerem." She touches his face, love and a little awe lighting her smile.
  • Kerem opens his mouth, but no words come out. After a brief glance in the direction of where the rest of the party theoretically is, he leans in to kiss her again.
