The Order of Abaris

The Mathematician Adepts

Characters following this order: Archelaus

This school represents an unconventional approach to the worship of Valris, the Orhan goddess of learning. The founder, Abaris the Thrice Blessed, maintains that the conventional depiction of Valris as a goddess of the stars is a limited vision of her true nature. Abaris has reinterpreted Valris as the divine principle of ratio and harmony that is most clearly seen in the movements of the heavens. Valris is the goddess of number, ratio, and harmony, those basic concepts that underlie all things. Abaris sees the principles of Mathematics to be the principles of all things. In numbers the Order of Abaris see many resemblances to things that exist, more than just air, fire and earth and water, but things such as justice, soul, reason, and opportunity. The Mathematician Adepts say that the ratios of musical scales are expressible in numbers and that all things are modeled on numbers, and numbers are the first things in the whole of nature. They say that the elements of number are the elements of all things, and the whole heaven to be a musical scale and a number.

The Mathematicians are a secretive, ascetic order and their main goal is the development of wisdom along mathematical lines. Because of their secretiveness they are sometimes mistrusted, and their dismissive attitude towards other religions makes them few friends.

Talismans: Talismans are typically in the form of geometric shapes, especially triangles.

Other Side: Valris' realm is usually depicted as an abstract place of perfect geometric forms. Because the Mathematicians believe in reincarnation, they do not see themselves as actually having to dwell in this realm.

Disadvantages: As mentioned above, members of this order are often mistrusted and even disliked, partially because it is a new order that has yet to establish its place in society. In addition, the order's admonitions against building up personal wealth, and the ascetic lifestyle it demands, often put off potential members.
