The Whale and the Serpent are locked in an eternal undersea struggle over who gets to win the world, with many smaller spirits down to "riders" of individual waves. The peninsula is believed to be one of the coils of the Serpent even. The Whale gives birth to Sea, Serpent drinks Sea to keep land dry - hence the tides. The Whale is also associated with waters, and the serpent with the winds.

Because of this dichotomy, the spirits aligned with the serpent are adverse to those of the whale to some extent and vice versa, and a character can really only worship one or the other fully. The result is that the spirits of the other side of the tradition are considered neutral rather than friendly to a practitioner who joins the core practice associated with the other side.

Those of the Orhan pantheon think that the whale is actually Shaal, and the serpent, Neela, but they have no proof of this.
