  • Sebastian: Egani is finding that it can be somewhat inconvenient this far from civilization. The ease with which he is accustomed to aquiring specialized supplies is gone. He finds himself in need of some custom metal work, and so he seeks out the local blacksmith. As he approaches the forge he sees a large gathering of men. One man stands out, both physically and due to a strange air of authority.
  • Okhfels is standing off a few feet from the forge, actually... just in case he's needed.
  • Okhfels is drilling a group of a dozen or so men, training them to react to various drumbeats with formation and stance changes.
  • Egani approaches the big guy. "Hi, Okhfels, right?"
  • Okhfels: "Right." he doesn't look away from his men. "Raise that spear, Kalden! You're not going to kill him if you stick him in the kneecap."
  • Egani: "You're the smith around here, right?"
  • Okhfels: "Nope." Okhfels points over at the forge. "The man with the gray hair and the squint over there... he's the smith.":
  • Egani: "I could use your help in a couple of matters," eyeing the large man's biceps.
  • Okhfels: "I'm busy."
  • Okhfels doesn't mince words.
  • Egani: "Do you suppose you'll be less busy after a while?"
  • Okhfels chuckles. "I plan on retiring in thirty or forty years. Is that soon enough for you?"
  • Okhfels: "Kalden! Raise that spear or I'm going to wrap it around your neck!"
  • Egani: "Sometime today would actually be better. If it isn't too much trouble."
  • Egani: "I need someone like you for just a short while, actually."
  • Egani: "You know where I live, right?"
  • Egani: "It's the house."
  • Okhfels: "The one that fell out of the sky? What am I saying... that's the only house in a thousand miles."
  • Okhfels: "What do you need?"
  • Egani: "Well...actually I'm kind of embarrassed to be asking this, but I need someone who's really strong to help me lift something."
  • Okhfels calls out one of the older men from the troop. "Uskel, your turn. You know the drill, see if you can teach it to the rest of them."
  • Egani: "I don't mean to be rude, or to waste your time, but it's kind of important and I don't have enough clearance to erect a proper crane."
  • Okhfels turns to Egani. "Alright, show me what you need... you're bold enough, I'll give you that."
  • Egani leads the big man off toward his house. "See, it's in my workshop...in the low shed behind the house."
  • Sebastian: The two men find Alexander standing outside the door sipping from a mug and chatting amiably with Marcia. As Egani approaches he hands her the mug, bows and steps forward.
  • Okhfels follows, thinking to himself, "When did I get so busy?"
  • Egani: As they duck into the shed's entrance and their eyes adjust to the lower light level, Okhfels sees a giant made of wood and metal bits with great cogs and pulleys. The strangest element is the large brass birdcage in the...thing's...torso -- full of chattering scarlet birds!
  • Egani: "This is it..."
  • Egani: "See, I have room for it to stand, but I can't get the blocks mounted overhead."
  • Egani: "And I'm just not strong enough to do it myself."
  • Okhfels: "No, you'd bring the whole thing down."
  • Okhfels looks at the big creature suspiciously.
  • Okhfels: "What... ah, what is it?"
  • Sebastian: Alexander stands out of the way in the doorway. "That's an excellent question my large friend."
  • Egani polishes the large wood maingear of the pelvis. "It's an automaton that I've been working on for years."
  • Okhfels tries to see where to get a grip on the thing. He doesn't want to break anything... or take a chance on GETTING broken... magic is one thing, but Okhfels doesn't trust the powerful stuff.
  • Egani looks at the intruder, startled. "Hello?"
  • Sebastian: Alexander's flamboyant coat flashes in the sunlight filtering through the doorway. "Oh, don't mind me. Please, carry on with what you were doing."
  • Egani: Gesturing with his eyes toward the fop, "Okhfels, is this one of your men...?"
  • Okhfels: "No."
  • Egani: "Um...well...anyway, if you help steady it while I winch it up to about 50 degrees, we'll slide it off the bench and then hopefully you can prop it up to the standing position.
  • Egani: "
  • Okhfels: "Fifty... what?"
  • Egani: "You know...about half way up...like this," Egani is gesturing with a tilted hand.
  • Okhfels: "Oh... okay..."
  • Okhfels gets behind the monster and gets ready to shove it upright.
  • Egani begins reeling in the rope. "Excuse me sir, since you're here anyway, could you please lend a hand?"
  • Okhfels pushes the monster upright, and makes sure that it stays that way.
  • Okhfels: "So what is it?"
  • Sebastian: Alexander looks around to see who Egani might be speaking to. "Me? I'm afraid that lifting heavy objects isn't really my forte sir." He looks pointedly at his terribly over-done clothes as if to say "And besides, I just had these cleaned."
  • Okhfels is worried that he's going to be told to stop it at some point.
  • Egani rushes in to make sure that it's all good. Smiling, he pronounces it a success.
  • Egani: "Thank you so much!"
  • Okhfels: "You're welcome. What is it?"
  • Egani: "It's a machine! I do think that it's ready to activate."
  • Okhfels: "Is it?"
  • Egani: "Aaron, are you there? Try to move."
  • Okhfels steps back, nearly knocking over a shelf full of fragile-looking jars.
  • Sebastian: Alexander has a portable writing desk and a piece of charcoal out and is unobtrusively taking notes.
  • Holmes: The mechanical man jerks for a moment, and then falls quiet again.
  • Egani: "Ah, well, it may need some further tuning."
  • Egani: "Shall I let you know when it's operational? Really, this is one of the most exciting projects of my career."
  • Okhfels: "No lie."
  • Okhfels: "Yes, I think I will want to know. Isadora, too. She'll want to know."
  • Holmes: The creature really is a marvel of sorts. Once, long ago, Okhfels remembers a traveler to Teth Hold who came from deep in the earth, who had a man of metal with him.
  • Okhfels: (Do I remember his name?)
  • Holmes: As Okhfels wracks his brain for the name, it comes to him from far back in his memory somewhere: Harganin.
  • Okhfels: "Egani, you ever met a man named, erm.. Harganin?"
  • Okhfels looks distinctly uncomfortable. Being in the presence of a very large man who is distinctly uncomfortable isn't a comfortable place to be.
  • Okhfels: (since you haven't...?)
  • Egani: "The name doesn't seem familiar...why?"
  • Okhfels: "He had one of these. Look, I have to go back."
  • Egani: "Thanks again for your help. Please do let me know if there's something I can do in return."
  • Okhfels ducks out past Alexander. "Yes... I will...." his voice fades as Okhfels hustles back to the camp.
  • Holmes: As Egani ponders his creation, possibly thinking about what went wrong, it shudders again, and falls still again. Then a moment latter another shudder that seems to catch something in other parts of the fake man body.
  • Holmes: Then it stands up, and looks at Egani, and speaks, "I'm am Aaron. What can you tell me?"
  • Egani: "Hello Aaron! I am Egani. I have been building your shell for almost ten years. I hope you find it comfortable."
  • Holmes: "It...will suit my purpose," says the thing with little emotion.
  • Sebastian: Alexander contines to take notes from the doorway, "Intersting," he mutters under his breath.
  • Holmes: *
  • Holmes: *
  • Holmes: *
  • Holmes: A bit later, as Alexander watches as Egani chats with his new creation, others arrive.
  • Egani: "Oh, you're back! I was wrong, it's sorting itself out, even now!"
  • Okhfels comes in first. he's wearing his sword now.
  • Okhfels doesn't say anything, but finds a spot near the door. He's clearly concerned.
  • Isadora: "What's sorting itself out, exactly?" Isadora is right behind Okhfels through the door,
  • Egani: "Aaron, say hi to Okhfels. He helped me get you going. And this is Isadora..."
  • Archelaus finally arrives.
  • Okhfels looks scandalized that he's accused of having a hand in this...
  • Isadora: Helped, did he? Isadora shoots a look at Okhfels, and is mildly reassured by his expression. "Yes, I'm Isadora," she says to Egani--not directly addressing Aaron. "What's going on, Egani?"
  • Egani: "This is Aaron."
  • Egani: "I've been working on him for years. Kind of a back-burner project -- an on and off kind of thing.
  • Egani: "Since coming here, I've made some remarkable headway."
  • Archelaus drifts as close as he dares to the metal man and starts taking measurements as unobtrusively as he can.
  • Egani: "The white wood and especially these red birds are treasures to behold."
  • Okhfels: (it's a shed...)
  • Okhfels thinks "White wood?"
  • Egani: "And it turns out that Aaron is something of a scholar. What outstanding luck!"
  • Isadora: "What is... Aaron... for?"
  • Egani: "For?"
  • Isadora: "What does it *do*?"
  • Egani: "Oh...whatever."
  • Egani: "I mean, he's like you and me. What are you for?"
  • Holmes: As Archelaus examines the being created by Egani, he can absolutely clearly see the patterns of the essence that tie the thing together, and which make it operate. As Egani has said, the birds are what are powering the thing, making it move. But he senses something more than that, some sort of being that controls all of it. It seems to be found all throughout the wooden man.
  • Holmes: But mostly it seems to inhabit the birds and some of the wood of the cage.
  • Isadora: "I'm for running this camp, keeping the flower trade going, and bringing down misery on the heads of tinkers who feel like showing up, using my camp for their magical mucking-about, and expecting me not to care."
  • Isadora glares impartially at Archelaus and Egani.,
  • Holmes: Something about the patterns created by the magic say to Archelaus in obvious terms that the birds are somehow associated with patterns he's seen in the White Wood. The are "of" that place.
  • Sebastian: Alexander's note taking is speeding up and his brows are furrowed in concentration.
  • Okhfels moves to a supporting position behind Isadora's left shoulder.
  • Egani: "Oh...I didn't come here per se. I was trying to explain that to you when I first arrived. Archelaus here, brought me...apparently by mistake."
  • Archelaus: "It was not a mistake. It was part of Valris' great pattern."
  • Archelaus: "I just don't know how yet" he adds, trailing off.
  • Isadora: "Ah, Valris' great pattern. This sounds suspiciously like progress. I'm going to guess wildly here, and say that Valris' great pattern might also have something to do with the lake? Eh?" She smiles encouragingly.
  • Egani: "In any case, the whole series of events, while admittedly somewhat unsettling, has been quite fortuitous. Y Ou? have to agree."
  • Archelaus: "Do you have any idea of the reason behind your recent progress?"
  • Archelaus: "Have you done anything differently? Used any new components?"
  • Egani continues to beam, oblivious to any consternation felt by the others. "Sure! These birds are incredibly potent Essense machines."
  • Archelaus: "And the birds come from where?"
  • Archelaus: "Exactly?"
  • Isadora: "I'm thinking about setting the house on fire," Isadora murmurs over her shoulder to Okhfels. "I hate being ignored."
  • Okhfels: "Say the word."
  • Sebastian: Alexander pauses, looks pointedly at Isadora, and then goes back to writing.
  • Okhfels can make it happen.
  • Egani: "There's a large colony of them on the edge of the lake."
  • Egani: "Maybe they range all through the forest. More exploration is needed to know for sure."
  • Isadora: "Actually," she says, still quietly and directed at Okhfels, "could you pull that boat away from the water? Enough that a few skinny busybodies won't be launching it without help?"
  • Okhfels: "Now?"
  • Isadora: "Not right now. But... soon."
  • Archelaus: "I doubt they'd be native to both those places: the lake and the woods."
  • Archelaus: "They don't seem to like each other."
  • Okhfels: "When we're done, then."
  • Egani: "Isadora, Aaron has a special gift, it seems. For those who partner with him, a treasure trove of knowledge is available. You might be interested, since I know that you consider knowledge important."
  • Egani: "He seems to store it up like a learning machine and then give it out to those who help him learn. It's fascinating."
  • Isadora looks a little taken aback. "I'm starting to consider it vital, even. Mother would be very proud. But, ah... partner?"
  • Egani: "Yes. What? Wjat
  • Egani: "What's wrong?"
  • Archelaus: "What's the source of his knowledge. I mean, does he know anything about the stars?"
  • Isadora: "What's wrong? The mind boggles. Let me try the question again: what does partnering mean?"
  • Egani looks at Archelaus, "Hard to say, you should talk to him."
  • Egani turns back to Isadora. "Um, you just, y'know, share what you know with him and he shares what he knows with you. And since he's sharing with others, you get the better end of the deal. I think."
  • Archelaus starts to be distracted by the opportunity for knowledge. "So, Aaron, how far into the celestial realm does your knowledge extend?"
  • Holmes: Something in the distance alerts Isadora to a change in her camp. Something is going on. Sounds from the men barely make it to Egani's home.
  • Isadora looks askance at the construct, then back at Egani. "I'll try it later, when it's less... busy. On that note, I'll be back." She steps outside to look in the direction of the noise.
  • Okhfels follows.
  • Sebastian: Alexander is still standing against the wall taking notes.
  • Egani barges over and loks at Alexander's notes.
  • Sebastian: Alexander shows him the neatly written notes, all of which are in some strange cipher Egani can't recognize.
  • Egani: "So who exactly are you?" Egani continues to be polite.
  • Egani: "So who exactly are you?" Egani continues to be polite.
  • Sebastian: Alexander looks up, seemingly startled, "Who, me?"
  • Egani: "Yes. I've been here for a week, trying to get to know everyone and we haven't met."
  • Sebastian: "Ah, well that's not all that surprising. I'm not really anyone of consequence."
  • Egani: "The others -- those who make up the obvious power structure here, seemed to know you and not care for you. But they also didn't mess with you. So I don't think it can be as simple as you're suggesting."
  • Sebastian: Alexander smiles depreciatingly, "I am a clerk of sorts, a secretary if you will. I keep notes about what goes on."
  • Egani: "And...for whom do you work?"
  • Sebastian: "Ah, I see your question now. Yes, well, I'm officially attached to Mister Sebastian."
  • Egani: "And who will read your notes?"
  • Sebastian: "Ah, well, they're mostly for me. I don't really have a very good memory really. Mister Sebastian is always chiding me about it, so I write things down. It's very useful."
  • Egani smiles. "If I understand the way this new boon works, Aaron can help you with remembering stuff. You might consider working with him for your own betterment." And with that, Egani departs, fetching Marcia and going to see the wonderful new arrival.
  • Sebastian: Alexander stands and seems to consider, he looks at Aaron curiously. "Hello."

  • Isadora comes striding purposefully towards the boat, looking impeccably groomed and quite calm. "Stargazer, you out here?"
  • Holmes: Isadora, out for her morning run sees the elderly astrologer at the lake shore working on the boat that he and Haikain have been working on for a few days. It seems nearly complete. Haikain, and their other conspirator, Egani, are missing. In fact, Egani seems to have been missing for a few days.
  • Isadora: "There you are. I hope you can spare me a few minutes."
  • Archelaus climbs out from under the boat, a big smile on his face.
  • Archelaus: "You know, there's a smal hole in the hull. If I look through it at just the right angle, I can see the stars even in the daytime."
  • Isadora: "Wonderful," Isadora says, smiling brightly. "What about the view of the stars from land? Something lacking, so you built a boat?"
  • Archelaus: 'How else could we get to the exact center of the lake?"
  • Isadora: "My, what an excellent point. Would you be so good as to remind me what's in the exact center of the lake?"
  • Archelaus: "Hmmmm. Didn't that catographer fellow tell you? They're very forgetful, you know."
  • Isadora: "Isn't he the one who's a little, ah, shy? I'm sure it just slipped his mind." Isadora rocks back on her heels a bit, still serene.
  • Archelaus: "Yes, quite. Or perhaps he's gone off to deal with that swamp fever problem."
  • Archelaus: "I don't suppose one would wnt that spreading to all the soldiers. It gets quite uncomfortable."
  • Isadora: "What swamp fever problem?" she asks, temporarily distracted.
  • Holmes: Isadora notes Pallos coming along. "Good morning M'Lady!"
  • Archelaus: "Nothing important, I just noticed the rashs on several of the soldiers. It's early days though. I imagine a really good physician could do something for them."
  • Isadora: "Morning!" Isadora smiles at him, but it's tinged with worry. "What news have you heard, Pallos?"
  • Archelaus: "Not really my area, I'm afraid."
  • Isadora frowns. This sounds potentially serious.
  • Holmes: Pallos smiles at Isadora, "I've heard rumblings in the hills again. More goblins. Though they seem disorganized. Fortunately."
  • Holmes: Pallos looks like he's been up all night. He yawns and stretches his athletic frame.
  • Isadora: "What about swamp... hey!" She glares at Archelaus. "You didn't tell me about the middle of the lake.
  • Holmes: Pallos waits for Archelaus to reply before saying anything. Sleepy eyed, he starts to scratch at the patch of skin on his chest not covered by his leathers.
  • Archelaus: "I really wonder if one shouldn't locate someone versed in the art of medicine?"
  • Isadora sighs. "You're overestimating our resources out here. Speckler is our best doctor, these days." She looks at Pallos. "Are you all right?
  • Isadora: "
  • Holmes: Pallos looks at her quizically. "Yeah, sure, fine. Why?"
  • Holmes: He continues to itch.
  • Archelaus: "The scholar who recently fell from the sky, what was his name?"
  • Okhfels spots Isadora from a distance, and comes running towards her.
  • Archelaus: "He said something about being a physician."
  • Isadora: Isadora, about to answer Pallos and Archelaus, looks up as Okhfels comes running. "What now?"
  • Archelaus: "When his wife was cut. He said something of the sort."
  • Okhfels: "Are you aware of the metal man in Egani's shed?"
  • Okhfels is only a little winded.
  • Archelaus: "That's it. Egani."
  • Isadora: Her eyebrows shoot up. "No. No, I'm not." She looks at Archelaus. "You say he's a doctor? With a metal man in his shed?"
  • Okhfels: "He said it was ready. He tried to make it move... it won't be long. Do you trust him?"
  • Isadora: "I... erm... shit. Show me where he is," she says to Okhfels. To Pallos, she hastily adds, "I'll find you to ask about those goblins. Get some rest!"
  • Okhfels makes sure that Isadora is following him, and runs back to the shed. He swings by his spot near the forge to grab up his sword, and slings it over his shoulder without slowing.
  • Holmes: Pallos watches after them scratching, with a confused look on his face.
  • Isadora follows, with the nagging feeling she's forgetting something.
  • Archelaus follows as fast as his robe will allow. "A metal man, you say. This I must see for myself."
  • Okhfels is setting a military pace. You want to roll to see if you can keep up?

  • Holmes: Sebastian is caught by Leuta as he traverses the camp, "Oh, my good man Sebastian, can you stop a while?"
  • Sebastian: Sebastian smiles his usual almost-smile, "For you my dear, of course." He bows slightly, "What can I do for you?"
  • Holmes: "Well, I wanted to speak with your friend, Laura," she says. "But I haven't seen her lately."
  • Holmes: Come to think of it, Sebastian hasn't seen her in more than a day, either.
  • Sebastian: Sebastian's smile freezes for a moment. "Ah, I haven't seen her recently. When was the last time you spoke with her?"
  • Sebastian: Sebastian has frozen in mid-step. To someone who didn't know him he might seem almost... anxious.
  • Holmes: "Well, it was two days ago," she says. "She was dressed differently. You know, she didn't seem herself. Well, not the same woman I met days ago, at least."
  • Sebastian: "Did she mention anything about going anywhere? Perhaps she went somewhere... to do... something..." Sebastian's voice trails of vaguely.
  • Holmes: "No, sorry, she didn't say," she continues. "I would like to see her again, however."
  • Holmes: Just then from behind Sebastian, comes the voice of Fazeris, " Ah, there you are my pretty."
  • Sebastian: "So would I, my dear, so would I," Sebastian mutters under his breath, too quiely to really make out. "Well, my dear girl, when I next see her I will surely let her know you were looking for her." Sebastian turns to Fazeris stiffly and bows, his usual grace is not in evidence today it seems.
  • Holmes: Fazeris bows a little, almost patronizing bow back.
  • Holmes: "Thanks for looking after Leuta."
  • Sebastian: "I always find it a pleasure to share the company of such a charming young lady." Sebastian seems a bit more like himself, but with a dangerous glint in his eye.
  • Holmes: From not far off, there's a shout in the camp. "The ship! The Ship!"
  • Sebastian: Sebastian turns, a bit perturbed, "That's interesting, I didn't think we were due for another arrival for at least a week..."
  • Holmes: As everyone turns to look up, out, over the lake, coming from the West, is a skyship of Sel-kai, resplendent in blue sails.
  • Holmes: The soldiers and men of the colony, and the Rhiani alike, come flocking to the clearing as the ship nears the shore.
  • Holmes: Lessos, the merchant, sets up his little impromptu trading table.
  • Sebastian: Sebastian looks around "casually" hoping to see some sign of Laura among the crowds.
  • Holmes: As Sebastian scans the crowd, he notes Nurek, who, as always stands out in this crowd, being neigher Shay, Laan, or Rhiani. His brown skin glistens in the early midday sun.
  • Okhfels runs up, close behind Isadora. This is the first he's seen such a thing. He's pretty impressed.
  • Isadora: "Thanks for the backup in there," Isadora says to Okhfels. "I'm starting to need more than just Sebastian to keep an eye on all of them. Now, I wonder what the good accountants of Sel-kai might want with us..."
  • Okhfels: "Count ... ants?"
  • Holmes: The ship starts coming down to the water of Green Lake.
  • Isadora: "Sort of like mercenaries, except other people do the fighting, and they handle the looting."
  • Okhfels: "Ah. Camp-followers."
  • Holmes: As it nears, Okhfels can make out people on the deck of the ship. It alights on the water of the lake, and settles in, now looking much like any normal ship. An anchor is put down, and the crew starts to make preparations to unload people and cargo by ship's boat.
  • Okhfels: "Rather a lot of them."
  • Okhfels: Strike that.
  • Okhfels: "That's a lot of camp followers."
  • Isadora: "And putting on a good show, too. This could be serious. Where's Sebastian? For that matter, where are those damn goblins when I could use them?"
  • Okhfels: "You could use goblins?"
  • Holmes: The first boat over the side seems to have guests in finery. Apparently they're unloading the important folks first.
  • Isadora: "Well, it would delay the landing... never mind, bad plan." Isadora walks a little faster, and curses internally a little more, as she sees signs of good breeding in the first passengers.
  • Okhfels follows, not entirely understanding.
  • Holmes: Sebastian sees him first, but Okhfels becomes aware of him shortly thereafter: the tall one of Salast's men. He's trying to blend in with the other soldiers behind them, as they await the ship's bounty.
  • Okhfels says to Isadora, "One of Salast's men is trying to blend in with the soldiers waiting on the shore."
  • Okhfels: "Shall I go kill him for you?"
  • Sebastian: Sebastian cuts through the crowd heading straight for the unfortunate man.
  • Holmes: As he approaches Salast's henchman, he notes a stench coming off of him - he smells of the swamp.
  • Sebastian: Sebastian steps up directly behind the man and speaks into his ear, "Ah, good, I've been hoping to speak with yout. Do you have a few moments?"
  • Holmes: He turns to Sebastian slowly, smiles for a moment......and then bolts.
  • Isadora: "Not yet--questions first. I need to know if that leech Salast found what he was looking for in the swamp," Isadora says to Okhfels.
  • Okhfels: "Right. Catch him alive."
  • Okhfels runs to join the chase, angling to get in front of the fugitive.
  • Holmes: The man sees Okhfels coming, and trys to veer off. Leading him right into Sebastian who, unseen by the man, uses his own weight to tunble him to the ground. Moments later Sebastian and Okhfels hold the struggling man to the ground.
  • Sebastian: Sebastian wrenches the man's arm back in a painful joint lock. "You have had the misfortune of bothering me on a bad day. I'm quite upset already, and your actions have not done much to make me feel any better."
  • Isadora jogs up behind them, glad that someone spotted the man--she was too busy squinting at the ship, apparently. She's curious to see how Sebastian handles things.
  • Okhfels stands back, ready to render assistance if necessary, but not interfering.
  • Sebastian: "Now, I'm going to ask some questions, and I want them answered. In fact," Sebastian tightens his grip, "I'm sure you want to answer them, don't you?"
  • Isadora stays for the moment--she doesn't know if Sebastian knows the right questions to ask.
  • Holmes: The man grunts his assent.
  • Sebastian: "Good, we'll start off easy: Why did you run?"
  • Holmes: Sebastian is aware that it's not only the pain he's causing, but simply the presence of Okhfels that's causing the man to talk. "I, uh, I don't know. I thought..."
  • Sebastian: Sebastian wrenches the man's arm back, "Let's try an easier one, where were you planning on going?"
  • Holmes: "Back," he responds simply. And he somewhat cringes at the thought as he glances momentarily in the direction of the swamp.
  • Sebastian: "Ah, now we're getting somewhere. What were you doing in the swamp, and where are your companions?"
  • Holmes: "They're still out there," he responds evasively. "Salast is doing....something."
  • Sebastian: "And why aren't you with him?"
  • Holmes: "I couldn't take it any more. I've been hanging out near camp, taking some things I needed," he says. "That swamp is hell. And there was no way I was going to miss the supply ship..."
  • Sebastian: "So, what is it that you were doing in there with Salast?"
  • Holmes: "I wasn't doing anything, really. I mean what do I know about magic spells and rituals and whatnot," he replies almost nonchalantly.
  • Egani -- strolling arm in arm with his young wife, starts on the outskirts of the active area, admiring the newly arrived ship, and works inward hoping for familiar sights and sounds.
  • Sebastian: Sebastian leans in close and whispers in his ear, "You do not want to lie to me, little man. I know you fear our large friend here, and he is to be feared, but the things I will do to you if you continue to waste my time are far more imaginative then the simple ripping off of your arms that he might manage."
  • Archelaus manages to tear himself away from the mechanical man and goes to where the ship is unloading.
  • Holmes: "What did I lie about?" says the man sweating profusely. "I'm a soldier. Salast just had us out there to protect him while he talks to the lake and does his magic."
  • Holmes: As the ship's boat arrives on shore, several people get out and head into the crowd. Archelaus sees somebody coming through the crowd, somebody from his past. Amestris was once his wife, but no longer.
  • Sebastian: A frightening chill creeps into Sebastian's voice. "Yes, I know..." He straightens abruptly pulling the man up with him. "I'm afraid our fun is going to be interrupted. The Lady Isadora and I have other duties to attend to." He shoves the man to Okhfels, "Here, hold onto him, see if he'll talk to you." Sebastian turns to Isadora, "My Lady, shall we great our new arrivals?"
  • Holmes: "Archelaus," she says with more than a note of derision. "I should have known you'd be here."
  • Isadora: To Sebastian, Isadora says, "Let's. I'm sure you're at least twice as pleased to see them as I am." She trusts Okhfels to take care of the prisoner.
