It came as a surprise to me after over 20 years of seeing “normal” world maps to come across an upside down one. The most surprising thing was that I found it surprising. It is completely artificial that we have North at the top of a map.

All of the early arab world maps were based on the flow of the Nile, and the Aussies are just being, you know, Aussies.
Way back when I was small, the guy that my dad worked for at the Y was from Australia and he had a south-is-up map on his wall. And yes it was very odd to look at something from a completely different perspective.
