The crate starts knocking from the inside, and the crew realizes the heat seals are failing. The destination is close – about a kilometer out — but the timing is suddenly bad.

A sap-whale parasite attacks the Longhaul from below: pale, blind, barbed, and drawn to heat. Its breach-wave slams the ship hard enough to pitch it forward, forcing emergency handling by Flint (the Ironbound mechanic) at the helm and causing damage to the ship’s seals.

Inside the ship, Charls (cockroach tzellicrae) gets thrown around badly enough to damage their blade of husks, changing it from a clean blade to something more jagged. Grakte (ektus wordbearer) works the crate situation below deck while the ship is still under attack.

Flint fires back at the parasite with the artillery spider and its own chest-cannon. The creature takes damage, establishes a grip track on the ship with its barbed mouth tendrils. Later attacks and twists produce useful salvage, including rope-length tendril cables.

The crate eventually opens enough for the truth to come out: there is an ektus girl inside – Nettle – awake and terrified. She begs them not to take her to “them.” She explains, with questioning, she carries memories someone wants, that she had been running, and that Madame Vey Sallow is connected to (or in charge of) the people after her.

After driving off the parasite and faking a breach of the cargo bay that lets them pretend the warming crate (and Nettle) were lost in the fight, the crew reaches Foxloft. The dockmaster directs Grakte toward Madame Vey Sallow’s employees, who lead him up into the higher levels of the Foxloft port for a chat. Madam Sallow is a cool, polished tzellicrae. She confirms the failed delivery, refuses payment for the lost cargo, but offers the crew another job once their ship is repaired. She emphasizes that she chose them because they are professionals and because Grakte is a Wordbearer, and expects them to live up to their reputation with the next job.

When pressed, Sallow claims the lost crate contained the remains of someone she cared about deeply, which Grakte realizes carries odd weight and likely concealment. Her use of the phrase “the comforting dark” resonates strongly enough to yield a Whisper.

Separately, Nettle explains that Sallow’s “remains” story is a lie, or a least a shrouding of the truth: a dying man placed some of his memories into her, and Nettle believes Sallow is likely the one responsible for his death. She describes the memories as being like many whispers all arguing inside her head, and the crew decides, at least for now, to protect her rather than turn her over.

The session ends with repairs, regrouping, a new cargo promised for the morning. Their current challenges:

stay useful without being controlled by Sallow

figure out how to remove or understand the memories in the girl’s head

avoid getting crushed by one of the most powerful merchant interests around Foxloft

No problem.

The crew begins already on the job, hauling a sealed warming crate toward Foxloft.
