{"id":2137,"date":"2011-01-19T17:46:37","date_gmt":"2011-01-19T17:46:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/random-average.com\/?p=2137"},"modified":"2011-04-20T17:49:44","modified_gmt":"2011-04-20T17:49:44","slug":"dude-stop-calling-it-wife-aggro","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/randomaverage.com\/index.php\/2011\/01\/dude-stop-calling-it-wife-aggro\/","title":{"rendered":"Dude, stop calling it &#8220;Wife Aggro&#8221;."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>\u201cHang on a sec, guys,\u201d<\/em> I read in the group chat window, <em>\u201cI\u2019ve got Wife Aggro.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve read this phrase or something close to it many times over the years, or heard it on Vent or TeamSpeak.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHold up: spouse aggro.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c\/afk a minute \u2013 baby aggro.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cGaaaaaah. Hang on guys I\u2019ve got kid aggro.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an interesting phrase; one that I\u2019ve given a lot of thought. Let\u2019s break it down a little bit.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re probably all familiar with the term \u2018aggro\u2019, but let\u2019s go to the Fountain of All Knowledge (Wikipedia) for an official definition.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Hate, aggro, or threat is a mechanism used in many MMOs as well as some RPGs by which non-playing characters (NPCs; such as mobs) prioritize which players to attack. Players who gain the most aggro on an NPC will be attacked by that NPC.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Oh, okay. I see what they\u2019re saying: they\u2019ve done something to attract the anger (or at least unwanted attention) of someone in their home. Okay. That seems\u2026 fine, I guess.<\/p>\n<p>But hang on a second: I want to look at one more thing. In the wikipedia page I quoted, there were links over to the definitions of \u201c<strong>mobs<\/strong>\u201d as well. Let\u2019s see what it says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A mob is a computer-controlled non-player character (NPC) in a computer game such as an MMO.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Okay. Seems fairly harmless.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMob\u201d may be used to specifically refer to generic monstrous NPCs that the player is expected to hunt and kill, excluding NPCs that engage in dialog or sell items, or who cannot be attacked.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Oh. Hmm.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Named mobs are distinguished by having a proper name rather than being referred to by a general type (\u201ca goblin\u201d, \u201ca citizen\u201d, etc.). Dumb mobs are those capable of no complex behaviors beyond attacking.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>*winces*<\/p>\n<p>You know why I\u2019m making that face? Let me see if I can explain.<\/p>\n<p>Someone in my group says \u201cGuys, I have wife aggro. AFK a minute,\u201d and here\u2019s what I hear:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cFellow Gamers: I have generated unwanted attention from a non-player character. Given the tone of my voice and the words I used, you can assume that (a) this is a generic, non-named mob and (b) it\u2019s not capable of any complex behavior beyond attacking. Give me a moment to take care of this annoying problem, and we can continue to play.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dude. <em>DUDE.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You wanna know why your spouse is angry with you? Maybe it\u2019s because you use phrases like \u201cwife aggro\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Is your spouse a gamer? Then they know what the term means, they know how it\u2019s usually delivered, and they know the type of slobbering, cackling goblin you just grouped them in with. That\u2019s bad.<\/p>\n<p>Is your spouse not a gamer? Then all they know is that you just used the same term to describe them as you use to describe fights with <em>this<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/randomaverage.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Brood-Mother-009.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2138\" title=\"Brood-Mother-009\" src=\"http:\/\/randomaverage.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Brood-Mother-009.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/randomaverage.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Brood-Mother-009.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/randomaverage.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Brood-Mother-009-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/randomaverage.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Brood-Mother-009-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">That\u2019s <strong><em>worse<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>\u201cBut dude, my wife <em>is<\/em> aggr\u2013 I mean\u2026 angry with me: what should I do?\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>I\u2019m here for, and I understand that you need some help, so let\u2019s break it down in terms I know we\u2019ll all understand. Let\u2019s talk gaming.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Now, I\u2019m running a dangerous line here, because while I think that the term \u2018wife aggro\u2019 is generally considered somewhat insulting and offensive (and rightfully so), it <em>is<\/em> aggro, and you <em>are<\/em> a gamer, so I\u2019m going to explain it to you in those terms.<\/p>\n<p>How does one get aggro? Again, Wikipedia explains:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[You] may calculate aggro based on factors such as:<\/p>\n<p>* The distance between the NPC and the player.<\/p>\n<p>* How much damage has been dealt by the player.<\/p>\n<p>* Heals and buffs given by the player to other players who are attacking the NPC.<\/p>\n<p>* Status effects on the player which make him or her more or less favorable to attack.<\/p>\n<p>* Hate generating or reducing abilities used by the player.<\/p>\n<p>* Time elapsed since the player last generated hate from the NPC.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Got it? Good. Let\u2019s look at these factors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The distance between the NPC and the player.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a little secret about relationships: couples who are in an otherwise healthy relationship really only argue about two things: money, and how much time they\u2019re spending with each other.  In an MMO, getting too close to a mob will cause it to attack. In real life, <em><strong>it is the exact opposite<\/strong><\/em>. If you\u2019re detecting a lot of hate coming your direction, take a good hard look at the distance between yourself and your spouse; if possible, look at it from the point of view of Someone Who is Not You, but if that\u2019s too complicated, just do some simple math: Have there been twice as many raid nights as date nights in the last month?<\/p>\n<p>If the answer is yes, you have been given a New Quest: Escort Mission, to the Movies, for a Romantic Comedy. And believe me, there <em>is<\/em> a timer in effect.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How much damage has been dealt by the player.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How many times have you uttered the words \u201cJust a second\u201d while you\u2019re in the middle of a fight, and then completely forgotten to go see what your spouse needed when the fight was over?<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s damage. Worse, it\u2019s damage that stacks \u2014 do it often enough and it\u2019ll take weeks for the effects to wear off.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Heals and buffs given by the player to other players who are attacking the NPC.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Are the other players in your group actually attacking your spouse? No (hopefully), but they are (maybe unknowingly) attacking your ability to be a good spouse in your own right. In short, are you spending more time taking care of the folks in your dungeon run than you are on taking care of the people you live with? You don\u2019t need me to tell you that\u2019s messed up, right?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Status effects on the player which make him or her more or less favorable to attack; and Hate generating or reducing abilities used by the player.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You want to try to avoid status affects like \u201cdazed and inattentive\u201d, \u201cmumbling\u201d, \u201cdeaf to the sound of my voice\u201d, or \u201calways late\u201d. Try to acquire buffs like \u201cput away the dishes\u201d, \u201cdid the laundry\u201d, \u201ctucked in the kids\u201d, and \u201cwatched Glee with me\u201d. Like those Damaging attacks, these buffs stack multiple times, so consistent repetition is <em>key<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Time elapsed since the player last generated hate from the NPC.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This goes back to the frequency of your offenses: bottom line, your family should never feel like they\u2019re second place behind an MMO. And hey \u2014 if you spend even two seconds thinking about it, you <em>know<\/em> that they aren\u2019t, right?<\/p>\n<p>But sometimes it\u2019s maybe a leeeetle bit hard to tell. After working all day, it\u2019s really nice to get a little me-time to kill things and take there stuff, right? Of course it is.<\/p>\n<p>But the monsters will always be there. Your family? They may always be there for you, but every time you say \u201cjust a second\u201d is a second that you lose and never get back.
