The gates are twisted and torn. The right gate lies cast aside while the left swings crazily in the wind. The stuttering squeal and clang of the gate repeats over and over and over&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Weeds choke the grounds and press in on the house itself, but against the walls the growth has been trodden under to form a path all about the place. Heavy claw marks have stripped the finish. Great black blotches tell of the fires that have assailed the walls. Not a pane nor shard of glass stands in any window. All the windows are barred with heavy planking, each plank marked with stains and gouges.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s obvious Ireena only lets me in because Ismark is with me, and vouches for me, and even then only because I apparently came at their father&#8217;s request.<\/p>\n<p><em>The interior of the house is well furnished, although the fixtures show signs of considerable wear. Obvious oddities are the boarded-up windows and the overuse of holy symbols in every room. The Burgomaster&#8217;s body is in one of the sitting rooms \u2014 on display as if for a wake that never happened. His body has not been preserved in any way, and it&#8217;s been 10 days, so despite the candles burning in his honor, the smell in the house is quite horrible.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ireena and Ismark barely seem to notice, so I don\u2019t comment on it.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>A bit of time passes&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s already the third time I\u2019ve assured Ireena I\u2019m here to help, but her reluctance or outright disbelief is starting to get to me.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSister, this farwarden tapped iron and swore to free Barovia!\u201d Ismark exclaims. \u201cLet her help us!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  [I\u2019m trying to Secure an Advantage and build up some momentum.]\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/hc_ynZp98U4Kop7Nvre4HzK00YKOQPp5Am-TAbnzzO2cy0LRtl7_nTY0G6Bk6tncOdDzMlYgCNqWQDAPXtOkudEwOmYzDxlpEOblbCcTO3gJP4So_3_FA4nu_EWeF7QwjIQYfq4Z\" alt=\"|217x171\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/bZNxoK117Y8t5z3GRzZcddobEPUn_IX_qrF0sKKU3x6-_O8f-07LIYSUo7rAlC8YJUcZS7_4cvb4GBgA4SiVqD_ZqEZEn-hhkFPJe9xP1lGR_DGI8GMPQnKK8KWWuDuV71Avltlo\" alt=\"|324x228\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ugh. Okay, that\u2019s\u2026 not great. Either a miss, or I have to burn all my momentum for a weak hit. Basically the opposite of what I\u2019m looking for. If I burn momentum to get a weak hit, I\u2019ll be down from 6 momentum to 3. Bleh. Otherwise, I either fail or \u201cyour assumptions betray you\u201d, and in either case I pay the price. Hmm. Give me a second so I can think about what my assumptions are.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/jXtajKD5JZNt8bC14UIvd2KN-hNU5U64aJncnsM3oHPLc3x5lC0_fQjv4aZMED5PUi_yHMLf9_tyuBKf35TflI-juLoT2rBgYMEACQBlV7vbWUfxA9OziH6iDMzWAPdcZ84YCkfb\" alt=\"|624x312\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My assumptions are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There are vampires.<\/li>\n<li>This \u201cStrahd\u201d is in some way obsessed with Ireena, and may be hundreds of years old, so\u2026 vampire.<\/li>\n<li>Lot\u2019s of women I\u2019ve encountered so far have been victimized in some way by either vampires or the Baron (or maybe both).<\/li>\n<li>Members of the farwardens have come here or been lured here before, and none have come back.<\/li>\n<li>The villagers are on my side now (this one is new, and FAIR, since I just swore an Epic vow and forged a bond with them. sheesh.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hmm. So either I fail (to secure an advantage &#8211; getting Ireena on my side like Ismark is) or my assumptions betray me, and in either case, Pay the Price. Or\u2026 kill my Momentum to get a weak hit, but still a hit.<\/p>\n<p>Pay the Price, if I go that route, would be\u2026<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/MlGoE48gneoD2GWAl0Mx8q9znZUcyeRuI8GvB4RSsKsCqVCYiBvW5WDUicr9RoVrNhXCCGC0FBYsJlVZ01sRvm5kuURzDnfjybybxsRhVOPZZ-gSW_TC7YccOKzVSoZusQkz6Fxr\" alt=\"|229x59\" \/><br \/>\nHmm. Okay, for that I\u2019d go to the \u201cOracle\u201d of the module and check the random encounter table for \u201cBarovia Daytime\u201d, in order to complicate things.<\/p>\n<p>1d8 gets me a 3, which is\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Okayyyy\u2026 One. Angry. Villager.<\/p>\n<p>You know what? Fine. Let\u2019s see where this goes. There\u2019s an angry hammering on the front door of house. Ismark and Ireena tense. I keep my hand free from my weapons, but the hand holding my shield tightens where no one can see, and I move to the door.<\/p>\n<p>Who is it? Oracle says\u2026<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/rNYmTdQ7Iq5B-rX-bL545irBYl-vuVIaCPCaJMI-dZQFgHU1nOxRWsP2lJpgLzLP-SaKG82OSUnvUC_ak9Y7up0SNfXaN59w-rz9MO256WfBD4RbmQDrkfgRcXM_FSxzA2opx_3x\" alt=\"|227x293\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s\u2026 a lot to unpack.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>\u201cCome out of there, Ismark!\u201d shouts a deep but somehow reedy voice. \u201cBring that foreign bitch with -\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I open the door fast enough that he cuts off what he\u2019s saying. His eyes widen, he takes a step back, but then his expression pinches down and the grip on a nasty little fisherman\u2019s knife tightens.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cChenda?\u201d Ismark says, stepping up on my right. \u201cWhat in four hells are you doing here?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI heard about that blasphemy and treason at the tavern &#8211; you and your little -\u201d he shoots a look me sidelong and chooses better words. \u201cforeigner, too far in your cups, saying things you ought not, and her making promises she can\u2019t keep, and be hanged if she tries.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHanged? Treason?\u201d Ismark snorts. \u201cWishing the monster Strahd dead isn\u2019t treason, Chenda, and blasphemy? Are you entirely out of your mind?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe Baron is the Land, the Land is the People, the People are the Blood,\u201d says Chenda, and it has the rhythm of a prayer to it. Something memorized. Something believed without thinking about it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I step forward, through the door, and man takes another step back, scowling. \u201cYour \u2018baron\u2019 is sucking the blood out of this land, fisherman. Literally, I think. How much can you lose before dying?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  [I\u2019m looking to Compel this guy to back down, but while it might be nice for me to go in with +heart, I don\u2019t think that\u2019s how it\u2019s going down. (And maybe this was a heart-based convince, but whatever &#8211; the result would have been the same either way. So.)<\/p>\n<p>  The move says they ask for something in return. I already rolled \u201cCollect a Debt\u201d on character goals, but I\u2019m really not sure what that is.<\/p>\n<p>  [Meanwhile, I\u2019m scrolling through the oracles idly, while thinking, and I spot \u201cyour actions benefit the enemy\u2019, and the first batch of oracles on old Chendra says something about \u2018in league with the enemy.\u2019 Okaaaay. Yes.]\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>The man\u2019s eyes narrow. \u201cYou speak like one who knows and fights evil. And you claim to be a farwarden, but I don\u2019t know from a scarecrow, and the last farwarden that came through here promised much and then ran off. Tell me who you are, girl. Who exactly &#8211; by what right do you interfere?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  [Basically he\u2019s demanding my bonafides, which we know from the oracles he\u2019s going to jog off and report to who\u2019s knows who. It\u2019ll eventually get to Strahd, who\u2019ll know that much more about me. Awesome.]\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Brigitte glares at him, then lets out a sound that\u2019s somewhere between a sigh and a grunt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am Brigitte Lindholm, youngest daughter of Torbj\u00f6rn and Ingrid Lindholm. I\u2019ve been a farwarden proper for three years, and before that I squired under Reinhardt Wilhelm, one of the greatest knights of the order, and my godfather. Traveling alongside him was the greatest honor of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She sighs, and it\u2019s a proper sigh this time. \u201cI craft armor in my spare time, horse hair makes me sneeze sometimes, and my favorite food is semla. Is that <em>quite<\/em> enough?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before the man can answer, Ireena steps forward, her arms wrapped tightly around her waist. \u201cIt is enough, farwarden. Thank you. Chenda\u2026\u201d Her said eyes come up to meet the angry fisherman\u2019s, and he looks away first. \u201cYour behavior embarasses this village. Go away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He opens his mouth to reply, but she is already walking back into the house, and I and Ismark follow, closing the door in the man\u2019s face.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>So, that\u2019s a pretty big scene from my poor Secure Advantage. Fates forfend I try a Gather Information anytime soon. Anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Strictly reading the text of the move, I still secure an advantage, I think, because of the choices I picked. Let\u2019s review:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/bZNxoK117Y8t5z3GRzZcddobEPUn_IX_qrF0sKKU3x6-_O8f-07LIYSUo7rAlC8YJUcZS7_4cvb4GBgA4SiVqD_ZqEZEn-hhkFPJe9xP1lGR_DGI8GMPQnKK8KWWuDuV71Avltlo\" alt=\"|324x228\" \/><br \/>\n\u201cOn a miss, you fail or your assumptions betray you. Pay the Price.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Okay, cool. My assumptions betrayed me and I pay the price. My betrayed assumption is \u201cthe villagers are all on my side, and the Pay the price is<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/MlGoE48gneoD2GWAl0Mx8q9znZUcyeRuI8GvB4RSsKsCqVCYiBvW5WDUicr9RoVrNhXCCGC0FBYsJlVZ01sRvm5kuURzDnfjybybxsRhVOPZZ-gSW_TC7YccOKzVSoZusQkz6Fxr\" alt=\"|229x59\" \/><br \/>\n\u2026 which is Chenda reporting back on everything he learned about me. Sweet.<\/p>\n<p>However, I don\u2019t get the momentum I\u2019d get from either a strong or weak hit. I just secure an advantage in the narrative, which I\u2019m fine with: that result is why I had Ireena come to my aid at the end of the exchange with Chenda &#8211; she\u2019s on my side now. Not enough to form a bond with, but enough to be \u201cNPC generally on my side.\u201d Cool.<\/p>\n<p>Also, since I have a bit of Oracle-level knowledge about what Strahd is generally up to, I&#8217;m going to say &#8220;getting Ireena a bit on my side&#8221; counts as a single tick in a single box on my epic quest to kick Strahd in his pointy teeth.<\/p>\n<p>Given that, I actually will Gather Information.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks for the help out there,\u201d I say, trying a smile. \u201cI feel like I\u2019m swimming in dark water with very, very large fish bumping my ankles. I\u2019m going to infodump on Brig (and mark +2 momentum!), because I don\u2019t feel like writing everything out as dialogue. Here we go.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ireena seems nice enough, but troubled.<\/li>\n<li>She&#8217;s very scared, but no helpless victim.<\/li>\n<li>She can&#8217;t remember anything about her early childhood before the burgomaster found her and adopted her.\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;My father only ever told me that he couldn&#8217;t bear to see a child alone and helpless, and I seemed immediately to be a daughter to him. I remember no time before that, so to me he has always been my father.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;He found me at the base of the waterfall that drops from the Ravenloft peak.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Each night, wolves and other creatures came and attacked the house &#8211; eventually, her father&#8217;s heart couldn&#8217;t take it &#8211; he died a &#8216;natural&#8217; death &#8211; his heart simply failed under the strain.\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;The wolves stopped attacking 10 days ago. They come from the forests, though they are &#8211; ultimately &#8211; Strahd&#8217;s creatures, I believe, and follow his command.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>No one in the town has the guts to help them bury their father.<\/li>\n<li>Strangely, the wolves haven&#8217;t attacked since their father died, but Ireena believes it&#8217;s only a matter of time, and not much time.<\/li>\n<li>With the greatest of the holy symbols &#8211; an ancient holy artifact &#8211; stolen from the house &#8211; both siblings fear the house is now defenseless.<\/li>\n<li>They MIGHT be safe in the church for a time &#8211; the priest seems to be able to keep the place protected &#8211; but they don&#8217;t know how long that will last, either.\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;The holy symbol was a great golden thing &#8211; &#8221; Ismark marks the distance with his hands, like a small dinner plate &#8211; &#8220;a sort of Sun symbol.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Ireena: \u201cIt was stolen during one of the attacks &#8211; so&#8230; very likely it lies in Strahd&#8217;s cursed castle.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;The priest might be able to tell you more about it, though it had been in my family&#8217;s home for several generations.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ireena looks at me. &#8220;What do YOU think? What should be done?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you&#8217;re going to the castle,&#8221; Ismark says. &#8220;I&#8217;m going with you. We&#8217;re doomed here, but I&#8217;d spit in that monster&#8217;s face and try to drive a stake in his heart, if I can.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And leave me here?!?&#8221; Ireena says. &#8220;I&#8217;m coming with you!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I frown, still thinking. \u201cAre you sure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Irena thinks, and nods, her mouth a firm line. &#8220;if it&#8217;s what you decide to do, after talking to the priest, then yes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll right,\u201d I say, \u201cgrab what you need.\u201d I turn to Ismark as Ireena leaves. \u201cHelp me with your father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ismark looks confused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to talk with your priest,\u201d I say, \u201cand the Burgomaster needs a proper burial.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ismark leads us down the street, past Mad Mary&#8217;s to E4, which is the Burgomaster&#8217;s home.
