Heroes should never be just a collection of numbers and abilities. They should have personality, appearance, and history. Characters who have both strengths and weaknesses are much more interesting to play then characters who have nothing but strong points. Consider giving your character some flaws like a fear of spiders, an inability to see more then one side of an issue, or even a physical injury.
Finally, remember that while heroes should have interesting backgrounds, the largest part of your hero’s story will be told through play .
When creating characters in Heroquest, use the standard guidelines for List Method creation (HQ p. 24):
- Select your Species Keyword. Attributes related to this keyword are added to your sheet at the level specifically listed under the Species Keyword, and can usually only be raised or lowered during chargen.
- Select your Homeland Keyword. All the skills and attributes related to that keyword are added to your sheet at the default Keyword rating of 17 and can (must) then be raised independently.
- Select your Occupation Keyword. All the skills and attributes related to that keyword are added to your sheet at the default Keyword rating of 17 and can (must) then be raised independently.
- Pick 10 'freebie' abilities that (usually) default to 13 (HQ p. 26) -- note that some Relationships Attributes will be higher than 13, since they are assumed to be 'under' one of your Keywords.
- These freebie slots may be used to aquire Followers. (Several Retainers or and/or __one__ Sidekick.)
- Everyone gets the "Fears Dragons" Personality trait at 17 for free! :)
- Make note of your character's Magic.
- Distribute 25 points (instead of the default 20) among either your 'freebie' abilities or those derived from your keywords.
- If directed by the GM, Select a Special Ability
