Within the Heroquest rules, there are four types of magic:
- Innate, or Common Magic (with subset being Common Magic Religions)
- Theism, the magic gods divided into different Pantheons. Types of followers include:
- Communal Worshipers -- the lay-folk of the faith, with little magical knowledge.
- Initiates -- more committed, magically gifted members of the theist faith.
- Devotees -- the most magically powerful of the theist faith. (Must be Concentrated.)
- Animism, the magic of Spirits (divided into different Traditions). Types of followers include:
- Wizardry, a misleading catch-all term for the the magic surrounding monotheistic Church. Types of followers include:
- Worshipers -- the lay-folk of the faith, with little magical knowledge.
- Liturgist -- a committed member capable of invoking the blessings and curses of the Church.
- Orderly -- a committed member of a saintly Order -- a sect within the larger Church.
- Apprentice - a committed member of a wizardry order who works for an Adept.
- Adept -- scholar of Grimoires written by founders of the faith. (Not necessarily Concentrated.)
- Many different kinds of magic require Foci.
Most magical disciplines (all but Common Magic) require an investment of time and resources from their members:
- Lay members (such as Spiritists and Worshipers) will invest a minimum of 10% of their time and resources (usually expressed as appropriate use of Hero Points).
- Committed members (Initiates, Practitioners, Liturgists, or Orderlies) will invest at least 30% of their time and effort on things related to the faith (usually expressed as appropriate use of Hero Points).
- Devoted members (Shamans, Devotees) will invest a minimum of 60% of their time and effort (usually expressed as appropriate use of Hero Points).
