Relationship E-mails

17 - Like a brother to Huigong Kung? Younger son, quieter and of cooler head. In his early 20's, Huigong has inherited his father's perceptiveness, if not his intimidating presence. Huigong is the sort of young man who says little and tends to fade into the background, but picks up many nuances about a person or a situation. He is well aware of the political turmoil that surrounds his house, and the various other nobles who have been trying to find some political means of ousting their household.

"I think Huigong is a fine man, and would make a fine heir to the Baron. I think he could best treat our people here, as well as work with neighboring nobles on larger causes, but without drawing in entanglements from the greater kingdom. Besides, I've known him for years, and trust him with my life. I'd not hesitate to follow him. I only wish the Baron would name him as the heir."

17 - Son of Kai Ling? Lord Aoshi's sister in law. When her sister Aileen passed, Aoshi had grown into a cold, unfeeling man. Lady Kai Ling eased him through his grieving and naturally an affair developed. Kai Ling is a widow, and while it's fairly "common knowledge" about the relationship between the two, it has surprisingly avoided serious gossip and scandal. Kai Ling has always been the pragmatist, able to cut to the heart of a situation and tell it like it is.

"I care for mother very deeply and dutifully. She raised me well after father's illness and death, and interceded with my Uncle, the Baron, to see me given position and training. I know that she and Uncle are ... close. How they comfort each other in their loss is their own affair, so long as they do not behave scandelously."

17 - Bad blood with Gunlang Kung? Eldest son, next in line for control of prefecture. Gunlang is a young man in his mid 20's, well liked by the people. While his father remained fairly distant, although seen as a fair ruler, Gunlang has always been a man of the people. Vibrant, young, and full of energy, he's always been one to lead with his heart, more than his head. While this has endeared him to the populace, his governing skills are not up to par. Not only that, but he is a bit hot-headed to those he believes underestimate him (in your experience).

"I don't think that Gunlang is a bad man, or would make an evil overlord. But he is too careless, to free with words, too willing to forsake duty -- the duty to bring justice and peace to this land -- for the sake of fun. He is loved by many because he is lovable, but he had responsibilities he does not fulfill, and this spells trouble for our prefecture. If only my uncle would see this, and would see how Huigang is better suited to our cause."

17 - Attracted to Sister Jian? Sister Jian is a young nun, who has been a major part of health and welfare improvement in Xian Quan. She's helped restore churches, feed the homeless, and promote the church all around. She's an excellent manager and has an eye for men with talent, able to assign the right person to the right job, and figure out what will help the people the most in a simple pragmatic way. Jian is overflowing with energy and is just a notch short of hyperactive. She also has a blazingly clear crush on Gunlang. Pretty much everyone except Gunlang has noticed this. She vehemently attacks anyone who has anything less than positive to say about him.

"Sister Jian is ... a very ... noble lady, pious and devoted both to the Right Path and to the people of our land. There is ... much to ... admire about, ah, regarding her. I wish that she were not so ... her dedication to Guigang ... he is not good for her! He --! I mean, she deserves someone who ... is as devoted to the people of our land as she clearly is. Um ... so, did you hear about that bandit chief who was tracked down in the Yellow Flower prefecture?"

17 - Unbeknownst to him, illegitimate son of Kung Aoshi? Older man, perhaps late 40's — early 50's. Tough, built like a blacksmith. An astute pragmatist, who holds little illusions about the nature of power or those who would try to oust him. Lord Aoshi has managed to hold his position over his fief as a benevolent dictator through his ability to discern character, competence, and earn the loyalty and trust of good men. He has also managed to hold his political rivals at bay through sharp maneuvering and always having a trick up his sleeve. Lord Aoshi is generally considered a good man who is used to making hard decisions.

"My uncle is a fine ruler of our land. He has wisely overseen its protection from within and without these many years. It has been an honor to serve him in that cause. I am gratified that he has shown such an interest in my career, and I can only wish that I would have the opportunity to perform my duty as wisely as he has. And if only he would realize which of his sons is the best choice to rule after him."
