Every hero starts play with a number of items they might reasonably be able to carry while traveling on foot. These starting items represent gifts the character has received in the past.

Malatra has a barter economy.

Heroes with a Craft ability may roll their skill of every adventure. If successful, the hero gains one extra non-magical item as appropriate per their skill.

Weapons

Weapons in Malatra are usually made of bone, stone, or wood. Metalurgical technology, apart from some small amounts of gold, silver, copper, and brass, is unknown in Malatra (with the exception of the Oscray). Weapons made from non-metal materials gain no bonuses (beyond those for enchantments), while special material or metal weapons will have a bonus outside of any enchantment, due to their nature.

Melee: dagger, club, spear, knife, staff, blowgun, throwing axe, large axe, flail, hammer, long spear, mace, shortbow, trident, bladeback flail(rare), long knife(short sword), korobokuran waraxe,
Ranged: dart, sling, javelin, short bow, long bow, bolo, boomerang, fighting net

Clothing

Belt, cap, halter, leggings, loincloth, rain cape, robe, sandals, sash, shoes, hat, toga, tunic, and vests are common, made from skins or woven from straw or hemp. Tattoos are considered “clothing” and count toward starting possessions.

Food

Beer, berry juice, bread, cheese, coconuts, or containers full of honey, eggs, fruit, grain, meat, milk, nuts, roots, water, wine.

Other Equipment

Arrows, darts, wicker backpack, basket, bedroll, blanket, candle, charcoal sticks, fish hook (bone), fishing net, flask, gourd, jug (clay), pouch, reed flute, hemp rope, vinze rope, sack, wax-bees, sewing needle, straw sleeping mat, torch, waterskin, wooden bracelet.
