The walled city of Caer Maighdean (mah-deen) is ruled by the firm and sometimes harsh hand of its soldier duchess, Morivenna Mac Aran. Maighdean, which holds close blood ties with the barbarian clans of the Northern plateaus, is by far the most militarized of the Duchy's cities, and it bears the brunt of the responsibility for fighting back the frequent raids from humanoid clans that infest the country thereabouts.

Caer Maighdean has thus far been able to hold off the raids, but has suffered significant losses of manpower and resources making it unable to aid the other towns in the area with any sort of reliability, and Mac Aran has been bitterly and publicly critical of the slim assistance she has received from the greater Kingdom.

Not to put too fine a point on it, Maighdean is Hell's waiting room. Lady Mac Aran manages to hold everything together, despite citizens disappearing at night, or turning up dead but still walkin' around, grizzly bears hunting foresters instead of vice versa, and fairie army troops wandering the forest.

Areas of Note & Adventure Hooks around Caer Maighdean

Castle Laigh

The mysterious Castle Laigh looms somewhere deep in the southern reaches of Maighdean's Forest, and is presently held under siege by a faerie army for reasons often debated at in the city's taverns:  the Castle is a bastion of the Unseelie Court, taken from the Faerie through some trickery or bargain or by force or the whole thing is a result of a mad series of miscommunications involving a drunken Satyr and a naive Unicorn... (stories differ on this point). At any rate, the Faerie want it back.

Dragonspire Glacier

Deep in the Dragonspires lies an ancient and forgotten glacier. Myths and legends tell of a race of ice warriors that dwell in the glacier, but no reports have confirmed this. Many travelers have attempted to venture past the glacier and have never been heard from again. Some who have returned tell of a marvelous city of ice and the beasts that protect it.

Citadel of Night

Deep in the wildest part of the Maighdean Forest stands a mist-shrouded citadel, guarded by a small but incredibly potent force of dark servants of whatever evil controls the keep.

Maighdean Cemetery/Starkadder Crypt

Located a mile or so south of Maighdean's walls, this ancient burial ground has been abandoned (and heavily warded) for the safety of the general public. It is said that t he dead within have risen up to retake over the land that was once theirs.

Maighdean's Forest

Encompassing the area to the north, east, and south of Maighdean is a great expanse of forest that conceals many hidden wonders and dangers. It is an area to be explored carefully, as some of the creatures within are quite dangerous (and quite hungry).

The Sewers

Located below the streets of Maighdean, the sewers are a foul and smelly place inhabited by giant rats and other unsavory creatures.

Ogre Skirmishers

Constantly at odds with the humans of Maighdean, these Ogres have a hidden battle camp somewhere in the nearby salt marshes to the southwest. Common rumors claim that the tribe these skirmishers represent have kin within the City's walls -- mercenaries in the pay of the Duchy -- and that both groups can trace their ancestry back to the Ogre tribes who allied themselves with the first Duke of the region.
