Since the time when Petrana expanded to its present boundaries, the city's aristocracy have made their homes atop the rambling, fertile greensward known as the Greens, overlooking the north banks of the Erynnor.

In more recent times, as the nobility lost their control over the city's political affairs, several of the great families exhausted their traditional wealth, and their urban estates have fallen into disrepair, or gone over to the hands of the newly rich merchant families. Meanwhile, the nobility moves carefully along, trying to find their way in this news economic world.

The current Arch-Duke Felix Soranzo -- an extremely astute negotiator with excellent business sense -- is still the source of many political appointments and a dispenser of other patronage. Also, the Ducal court still convenes in Petrana during the fall and winter of each year. Both the nobility and the Guildsmen of that city treat their counterparts with a certain amount of disdain and a great deal of mistrust; however neither side has done anything to precipitate a major political crisis -- yet.
