"Or maybe I'll just get an ice cream instead."

-- From the Thought-Record of Ben Faulk, the First One To Do Something Else

"Well, you weren't there, sonny, and I was, and that's the end of it. Being around for about a thousand years has its advantages, and that's that. And if you don't know what you're talking about, then stop your jaw waggin', that's what I say. Why, I bet you don't even know about Ben Faulk, which is a gas. A gas!

"Little Ben Faulk was a boy, about 13. He was in a local general store in Missouri on March the Fifteenth, 1904*. He had a few cents in his pocket, just enough for an ice-cream cone. Of course, his mother would give him a switching if he came home without the milk he had been told to buy. But, boys will be boys, and he bought himself a vanilla ice-cream instead. With fudge.

"What's the big deal? You young whipper-snappers... The big deal was, little Ben Faulk was the first one to do something different this time around. On March the Fifteenth the First, 1904, little Ben didn't buy the ice-cream and instead bought the milk. And that was the first deviation from the lost 500 years. What's the big deal? You see, because Ben changed his mind, the great Kansas City Gang? was never created, and the United States Department of Cancellations was never born!"
