Time is a secondary phenomenon on the World Ash, an order applied to a world that existed before time and exists outside of time. In effect, three different histories apply: a Mundane History, describing which events happen and when; a Nobilis Timeline, roughly causal, tracing the actions of miraculous entities and the consequences thereof; and the Timeless History, the disorderly arrangement of happenings that existed before the Angels invented time and (in some sense) exists still. Of the three, the Noble Timeline has the greatest impact on Noble lives.

Some Nobilis hold that there is an infinite series of times, in a growing, dizzying net of divergent, convergent and parallel times. This network of times that approached one another, fork, break off, or are unaware of one another for centuries, embracing all possibilities of time. Some hold that this exists only as applied to mundane history. Others maintain that it is true for the breath of Creation.

When a Noble experiences Commencement, their mind and body and nature becomes tainted with the Spiritus Dei. They are no longer vulnerable to miraculous manipulation. Changes in the structure of reality no longer affect them directly. They can remember Estates that die in their lifetime. If Excrucians kill the Estate of Thought, they can still think.
