The discovery of the Bright Race of Mars by the explorers of the HMAS Nelson was a double coup for the Empire's scientists, as they both demonstrated that an Aether Ship was capable of crossing the void between the planets and made contact with an extraterrestial race for the first time. The scientific community was further rocked when several naturalists began studying the Bright Race's biology. The Martians turned out to have a preformationist reproductive system that meant that they developed along Lamarckian, rather than Darwinian, principles. Unlike humans, they were able to pass along developed traits to their offspring. Thus, a Bright One who developed strong lifting muscles from dragging around Fractal Trees would pass these muscles along to his progeny. As a result, the race evolved extremely quickly. This ability was a two-edge sword, however, as a Martian who had lost his lower left arm would henceforce sire only three-armed children. It also meant that the Bright Race's caste system was extremely rigid. Only through the Rite of the Twin-Mooned Rain? could a member of the Bright Race seek to improve his family's position.
