Harrowdeep is a vast forest that stretches across much of the north; it is a spooky, magical place and heavily populated by Fairies.

History

Harrowdeep was spared most of the Dragons' devastation; the fell creatures had little interest in the Fairies and, aside from half-hearted invasions every century or so, left them alone. As a consequence, Harrowdeep received many Human fugitives and escaped slaves.

These refugees and their descendants, along with many stout-hearted Fairies, took part in the great battles between the Giants and the Dragons, acting as courageous spies, scouts, and irregular light infantry.

Yet when the Dragons no longer threatened them, the people of Harrowdeep found that the Diamond Throne had ambitions of its own. The Giants laid claim to all of the Dragons' territory, and also claimed suzerainty over Harrowdeep itself. The people of Harrowdeep, both Human and Fairy, do not accept this claim, and pride themselves on their fierce independence. The Diamond Throne's influence over Harrowdeep politics, however, has never been very strong and is now at a particularly low ebb thanks to three centuries of artful, shrewd diplomacy.

Cultural Details

Foreign Relations

Generally, Harrowdeep is isolationist. They have diplomatic contact, albeit somewhat strained, with the Empire of the Diamond Throne and enjoy some trade agreements with neighboring human fiefdoms, but generally the people of Harrowdeep keep to themselves, and what little they know of the Waste Lands and Zalavat to the south is centuries, if not millennia, out of date.

The overwhelming majority of Harrowdeep's population: Fairies. There are some Humans--farmers, woodcutters, trappers--but not very many. Once in a long while Harrowdeep might host a Dragon-Spawn who has come to research ancient lore, or a Giant and his or her retinue of Jackal-Kinn slaves may come for reasons of state, but few stay long enough to raise families or acclimate themselves to Harrowdeep's culture. Lion-People and Verrik are almost completely unknown here.
