With Optional Transcendence, each player is allowed to transcend when getting an Ability Check of 22, just like you are allowed to remove a Key when you meet the Buyoff action. If you decide not to transcend, though, there are repercussions:

• The ability is immediately demoted to 9.
• The Ability Check is reduced to 21.
