New Secrets

General Three-Corner Secrets

Secret of the Magical Duel

When confronted with Three-Corner magic, you can whip up a counter-spell by outspending the magician in pool points and beating his success level by rolling the opposed ability. Cost - Nothing.

Example - Harikiel the Bender cast the Werewolf Transformation spell, and spent 9 Instinct points to achieve an amazing (SL 4?) success using the Transformation ability. Daukai the Eloquent wishes to undo this spell, so she spends 10 Instinct and must get a legendary (SL 5?) success or better using Enhancement.

Secrets of Specific Abilities

Creation - Create Volume

You can create 1 cubic foot of matter; each additional point of Vigor octuples this volume. It may take a simple geometric shape. Cost - 1 Vigor for 1 cubic foot; 2 Vigor for 8 cubic feet; 3 Vigor for 64 cubic feet, and so on.

Divination - Scry

You may observe a familiar place or person in a reflective surface. The target may resist this effect. Cost - 1 Reason per 20 miles.

Enhancement - Enhance Self

Your Enhancement magic can affect your own non-magical abilities. Cost - 2 Instinct.

New Spells

Spells that Don't Need Secrets

Here's some spells that can be done using no Secrets at all -- only the 'core' skills of the Three Corner Magic system. The benefit of creating spells relying on only the Abilities and no Secrets, aside from the reduction in Advances needed, is that there are no associated Pool Point costs.

The downside is, the spells are more limited. The rules to observe:

  • Range: self or touch
  • One target
  • Instant or one-hour duration
  • Magical effects directed at unwilling targets are Resisted, usually with the "resist" ability.

Transformation

Transformation says it can be used to move points from one Pool to another(it should be Pool -- Clinton has said that the use of 'ability' in this area is a mistake), so in theory it would allow... - Moving pool points around on the target, temporarily, to give them a short burst of energy - Make food rotten, or drinkable water into dirty

You generally would not use Transformation to: - Make rotten food edible, or dirty water drinkable - Mending damaged items (boots, tears in clothes)

The reason for this is that Transformation is "night" foci, and as such focuses much more on creating more Chaos in the world, not reducing it.

Creation

  • Instant Tinderbox - making enough fire to start a real fire.
  • Create a glass's worth of water.

Destruction

This one's easy -- years of RP Gs make it a simple matter to envision ways to harm someone. :)

  • Hurt That Guy: it does what it says, with special effects to taste. Note, you do NOT need to hurt someone using a Complex Action (such as Scrapping, then Destruction) -- one roll on each side of the conflict will suffice, though you CAN use complex actions for bonus dice, if you like.
  • Branding Mark: Burn or cut or scratch or freeze a mark into a door or stone or ... slave? Eww.

Enthrallment

  • Your basic "Charm Person" effect, with the T So Y-added color that the target will almost certainly be unhappy with you afterwards.
  • Your basic "Hold person" in that you're telling them "you stand there and don't move." See also commands like 'Run from here, due East, as fast as you can.' Et cetera.

Divination

  • Obviously, this is good for your basic detection of magical auras/effects/whatever, but also...
  • Human Compass... a more literal definition of divination, but one that might be really useful.
  • Understand strange languages... not written, but useful as a kind of "comprehend basic meaning" when speaking to someone?
  • With a new secret, you could use Divination for a spell like "Poison Taster, but Without All the Dying" -- a spell that can be used in a complex conflict for bonus die on detecting poison.

Enhancement

  • Well, this one is actually pretty simple: in its basic state, it handles every 'blessing'-type magic around.

More Spells

Some of the names of the spells below were taken from Chris Pound's spell generator.

Creation - Horsa's Hellacious Oven

Horsa had to adapt his peaceful magic to the barbaric world of the Year of the Shadow. A cylinder of flame springs up around the target, who may make a Reaction roll to dodge out of the way. The cylinder is four feet across, five feet high, and the flames are one foot thick. The otherwise gentle Horsa noted that if one stands perfectly still he will not get burned... though the infernal heat may bake one into a crisp after a full hour.

  • Secret of the Invisible Hand
  • Create Volume: 64 cubic feet
  • Cost: 1 + 3 - 1 = 3 Vigor

Creation - Jaidu's Diminutive Deputy

Creates a mini version of you. It has 1 in your Innate Abilities and best skill, plus the Secret of Rat Size (though not necessarily ratlike in other respects). You have a number of advances to spend on this homonculous equal to your Success Level.

  • Secret of Magical Persistence: one week
  • Create Life: Secret of Rat Size
  • Cost: 3 + 3 - 1 = 5 Vigor

Destruction - Wail of the Banshee

The wizard utters an eerie scream, and all who hear it shall die.

  • Secret of Magical Contagion: 25 people
  • Massive Damage: quadruple
  • Cost: 3 + 4 - 1 = 6 Vigor

Enthrallment - Kattarnai's Imperfect Invitation

Kattarnai had little patience with bores, so she invented this spell. It makes a person feel like they've been called away elsewhere on urgent business... but after a while he can't remember why, or where.

  • Alter Senses: hearing
  • Gentle Touch
  • Cost: 1 + 1 - 1 = 1 Reason
