Whirrr. A pause. Whirrrrrr.

It may be that some of them survive. Such was our intent. We can no longer defend them. I am the only one of us left. I feel I must speak of this now.

I have spoken before of our interest in change. How could we not become fascinated by the Bright Race of Mars? In their adaptive nature they were very similar to us. They understood us in ways that most biointelligences could not. They understood our need for change. They were fascinated by our ability to guide our change. The Bright Race was guided by change. It is a subtle difference. It is one we strove to understand together.

We chose Deimos as our location. We built a base in Weinbaum Crater. Is it not obvious? We provided them with control over their environment. We gave them memetic encoding technology?. We had learned somewhat of our lesson. We did not interfere.

Clanks, from the stage, as it adjusts itself. Creaks from the floorboards.

It was a success. By our terms. By their terms. By your terms. They selected for intelligence. Not universally. Some selected for other attributes. We asked why. They told us that it was a mistake to rely too much on any one path. We are nothing but intelligence. This lesson caused great alarm among us.

Soon they passed beyond us. We kept Weinbaum Crater holy. In the next two hundred years, there were several messages from them. All delivered to the deserted crater. We delivered them to the world as religious texts. You know them as the Zoroastrian Reconstruction?. We were well pleased with the results.
