Like all scholars worthy of the name, I detest the author's practice of so-called "New Journalism" (and we have been forced to suffer this twice! Is there no end to the injustice?). Sadly, this excerpt remains the best documentation of this crucial episode. -- Ali bin Tariq?

From Eaglewing's Last Flight, by G. Rivers:

Lance Eaglewing took quick note of the situation. His wingmen remained in formation, waiting for the signal. His Tesla? Effectors were fully charged, ready for what he hoped would be the final run. The dreadnaught drifted ahead in the distance, its aetheric sails in tatters. The crew within were thought to host a portion of the Anger Investiture; they were lost from the moment they were infected.

So what was causing the alarm ... ?

On the scope: There. But I've never seen anything move so quickly! This must be the new engine we've been hearing about. I hope we can --

Eaglewing's hands played over the controls, and his aetheric flyer gracefully slid up and to the side. Just in time -- a blaze of energy washed by where he had been a moment before, followed almost immediately by the new craft itself, a blunt, brutal machine that eschewed grace for lethality. He distantly noted that his wingmen were alive; he touched another control -- hold it --

Yes. Hugh Rosewood? -- I'm not surprised. He's just the sort who'd leap at the opportunity to fly that crude thing. This won't be so hard after all. But why here, and now?

The Zograscope showed Rosewood's face, and by his expression, he was having trouble controlling the craft. Indeed, it had to arc all the way around the dreadnaught to turn, though Eaglewing had to admit that at that speed, it wasn't that much of a disadvantage.

Another attack run; another dodge; another near-miss. This wasn't hard at all. He focussed on the drifting dreadnaught, ignoring the alarm that continued to wail. Just another minute, and this ugly chapter will finally end...

His first sign of danger was when one wingman's craft just... vaporized. His second sign of danger was when the other wingman vanished. And the final sign was when his Zograscope was overridden, showing him the feral face of Baalhermon?.

Eaglewing closed his eyes, whispered an unheard "I love you" to Mary?, and reached for the Tesla? Effector's control.
