This page has listings of special materials in Middle Earth. These ratings should be considered typical, but will vary widely depending on workmanship (both higher or lower).

Precious Metals

These are usually used for jewelry or other forms of ornament.

  • Copper: used for coinage, jewelry and decorative work. Pretty 13
  • Silver: used for coinage, jewelry and decorative work. Pretty 5W
  • Gold: used for coinage, jewelry and decorative work. Pretty 15W
  • White Gold: used in jewelry. Pretty 1W
  • Platinum: used for coinage in some areas, but primarily used in jewelry. Pretty 1W
  • Ancient Silver: ornamental, found in rare veins in the Misty Mountains. Amenable to enchantment. Pretty 2W
  • Khazad Copper: Easily enchanted. Pretty 5W2
  • Khazad Gold: Easily enchanted. Pretty 15W2
  • Mithril-infused Copper: Pretty 10w2
  • Mithril-infused Gold: Pretty 5w3
  • Mithril: Pretty 15w3

Weapon Metals

Some metals on this list were forged into weapons only by cultures that no longer exist, the means to construct such has been lost, or the material is so rare in the Third Age as to be practically unobtainable.

  • Bronze : statues, weapons. Pretty 15, Easily Dulled 17
  • Iron: This is the standard weapon metal and gets no special ratings.
  • Steel: AKA Low Steel. Good Edge 13
  • Westernesse Steel : Good Edge 17, Noncorroding 13, Enemy of the Dead 17
  • Westernesse Steel: Magically infused steel of lesser quality. Good edge 17, Hard to Break 15W, Noncorroding 17, Enemy of the Dead 17
  • Ancient Dwarf Iron: A dark grey appearance and a dull luster. Good Edge 5W, Noncorroding 17, Hard to Break 5W, Scalebane 17
  • Beleriand: High-quality steel of elven make -- forged in Beleriand and unavailable today except in heirloom weapons. Good Edge 5W, Uncorrodable 5W, Hard to Break 5W2, Spider-foe 17, Orc-foe 17
  • Mordor's black steel; Wicked Edge 15W, Hard to Break 15W2
  • Mithril: Pretty 15w3, Keen Edge 15W2, Hard to Break 15W2, Easy to Enchant 15W2, Light 15W2

Other Minerals

  • Edhellarn (True Glass): Enchanted glass of superior hardness. Hard to Break 15W2, Pretty 20W2

Woods

  • Black Ash: The black wood is among the most prized of hardwoods. Pretty 17, Strong 5W, Fine Bow 15W
  • Lebrethon: This tree has an overall form similar to the oak, but with large three-lobed leaves which have a light golden color in autumn. The bark of the tree is even lighter than the silver birch, and the wood itself is naturally a pale yellow-gold color which makes it quite valuable. Pretty 17, Fine Bow 5W
  • Mallorn: the finest trees of Lothlorien. Pretty 1W, Fine Bow 10W
  • Ironwood: Hard 15W2, Easy to Enchant 10W.
