The setting for the project a rambling hotel, located nowhere and nowhen in particular; it lies on the outskirts, a converted farmstead -- private water tower, brewery, power, and a number of residence-oriented buildings connected (over the years) in maze-like fashion to become wings of the main house -- the entire place restored and reopened as a hotel. The rooms are reasonably large -- hardwood floors predominate. The furniture a mish-mash of styles and eras -- the sort of mix that would look horrible and mismatched anywhere else. The walls of the entire place are hand-painted with varying levels of skill and included a mix of portraits, landscapes, scenes, and disturbing abstracts, any of which might end up replaced or repainted over time. Most guest rooms share a bath with others on the same floor. Communication with the outside world is difficult: there are a grand total of perhaps a dozen phones on the premises (assuming you're even visiting the hotel in an era when phones exist), none of which are in the guestrooms. There are no televisions, even in the pubs, and cellular reception is terrible. Bookshelves can be found nearly anywhere, filled with a collection of texts that redefines eclectic. The food is good, if sometimes odd, and the place makes its own wine and beer. The Stories |
