Viewed from high up, Other World looks a lot different from Earth.

Earth's terrains form broad swaths, long mountain chains dividing rain-shadow deserts from wide oceans, forests growing up in river basins, vast ice sheets at the poles.

Otherworld is a crazy-quilt of terrain types, stitched together without regard for the laws of nature for indeed, the laws of nature in Otherworld are different than they are on Earth. The fundamental structure that underlies the geography of Otherworld is the Domain.

A domain is a volume of earth, water, air and sky that is controlled by one of the great land spirits. These spirits are near-deific in power, but pay little heed to the affairs of mere mortals. It is these spirits that make the wind blow, the rain fall, the tides turn and the earth shake. Usually, a domain is named after the great spirit that inhabits it, though there are some exceptions.

The great land spirits care not for worship, but go about their business of maintaining their domains without regard for priests and temples. This is not to say that hopeful mortals do not create such churches, however; on the contrary, most settled places have at least a shrine or two to the local great land spirit. By aligning themselves spiritually with the mystic forces at work in the domain, priests and mystics of the great land spirit can share in a tiny fraction of its power.
