Magic talents are innate magic that people are born with. They come in a wide variety, from natural talent at a mundane ability, to big magical powers, and magical mutations. Talents are rare in some parts of the world and quite common in other locations. Read cultural writeups to see the frequency and power of talents in a given location. They are not hereditary. It is extremely rare for a person to have more than one talent. Talents are best thought of as magical mutations. As such, they are as likely to be negative as positive. Due to mortality rates, it is accepted that most powerful talents people who survive to adulthood will be positive or neutral. They are far more likely to be weak and subtle, than powerful and obvious. A character must purchase a talent at creation since people are born with talents. If no talent is purchases than it is assumed that no talent exists for that character. Like every rule, this has one exception. A talent may be purchased after play has begun, with GM approval, if the player can give an explanation for why a dormant talent has just been discovered. For example, a character from an island in the far south could potentially discover the talent, Communites with Horses, when she arrives in the Eastern Continent since that will be the first time that such a talent could be recognized. Common are subtle powers that are generally used to augment mundane skills - few would recognize them as magical. The person is just specially gifted in some way. Subtle Talent Examples
