The Deadland is a large area of land to the east of the mountains. It stretches many days journey from south to north, and three days journety from east to west. It is an inhospitable land ruled by a malevolent spirit of great power. The Thunderbird and the Deadland's Spirit have an ancient feud, so the Thunderbird passes over the area and takes his rain clouds farther east. Because of this, the Deadland only has scrub brush and sparse grass most years, so we don't travel there. However, in years of late spring, when the ice demons stay to the south longer, the winter moisture produces good growth in the deadlands and many of the bison herds are drawn to it, so the tribes also are drawn to the lands.

When we approach the Deadland we also confer with Grandfather Oak first to find out where the Deadland's Spirit watches and try to avoid it. It has led many a young brave to his, or his horses, death, and has grasses that ruin the milk of the goats.
