Evil Animal Minion Generator. (via, I am given to understand, the hidden Djinn)
Lately, I’ve been pissing people off. No, I can’t point at anything specific for this statement, but I’m vaguely (disquietingly) aware that I’m rubbing folks the wrong way. It’s not intentional — I make a comment here and there that are simply a truth (or a truthful retelling) and I end up with someone less […]
Monday Mashup #9: West Wing Bryant’s comment: I think the most interesting thing about West Wing is watching the relatively inexperienced crowd deal with power.
Population: One: Monday Mashup #8: Beach Boys Without pushing in any particular direction, I?d say there?s potential for romantic scenarios, ecological scenarios, fun-oriented scenarios, or even auto racing scenarios.
Population: One: Monday Mashup #7: Shogun If I was going to boil Shogun down to a sentence of summation, I?d say it was about a man plunged into a culture he considers barbaric, and how he learns to understand it.
WISH 65: That’s My Job Does what you do for a living have any impact on your gaming? Have you had occupational details intrude on your descriptions of how something works? Have you ever dared a player to go ?Hotwire a car, then, if that?s how you think it?s done??
I will not be GMing any games this weekend, including Friday night. As near as I can tell from my Palm calendar, the last time that happened (not counting the weekends when we were out of the state for some reason) was November of 2002, and I’m still not sure about that, cuz I think […]
Some more character background for Dylan MacEvitt, member in good standing of The Agency.
When the OA rules for d20 came out, I snapped them up — I’d always wanted to run a proper Oriental campaign back when Oriental Adventures came out for 1st edition AD&D, but the whole thing had never really gelled, and I was really psyched to do something with the new rules. On the other […]
Note to self: preparing a list of likely (and point-balanced) qualities for a well-known Chancel and Imperator does not appreciably make the Chancel- and Imperator-creation process go any faster than doing nothing of the kind beforehand.
Friday, the DnD group continued to wander aimlessly through a deadly forest that drives people insane, rots your food, and attracts things that go *munch* in the night. Huge surprise, there was combat, and lots of it. Saturday was Jackie’s “high level” Necropolis game. (I put that in quotes because the group is three levels […]
The Vulcan Bros. Industrial Heritage Plusurewerks — great art, interesting flash.
Related to this post on Justin’s ongoing struggles to improve (and our ongoing struggles to help him), I felt I had to add this addendum: This Saturday, Justin decided that he wanted to GM a DnD game for me, Jackie, and ‘maybe a few others’. (Ironically, I’d just commented to Dave the day before that […]
Stumbled across an old article on Pyramid’s site entitled “How to keep Gaming after Adulthood”. The author makes some excellent points about what makes gaming as an adult more difficult than it ‘used to be’. […] the conditions under which most of us learn to roleplay — high school and college — are ones that […]
Cool cemetery photos. Should be grist for at least one or two games. 🙂

So White Wolf is suing Sony for copyright infringement re: Underworld and Vampire: the Masquerade. … alleging 17 counts of copyright infringement for the film Underworld, set for release on September 19. White Wolf alleges that Underworld characters, theme and setting are based on White Wolf’s award winning games Vampire: The Masquerade? and Werewolf: The […]
Population: One: Monday Mashup #6: Huck Finn Huck, the quintessential youth, and Jim, the quintessential outsider, float down a river on a raft. They are not in control of their travels to any large degree, and they are willing to accept what comes as a gift from the gods. Adventures, in many ways, happen to […]
Note to those blogrolling this page: Random Encounters now pings as http://random.bears-cave.com.
Underground base and tunnel links. As the link reads: tunnel boring machines, military bases, alleged alien and ufo bases, FEMA, x-files style links… (Via Population: One (see linkbar))
One of the nice things about the Blogging internet is that you can post a rant stating that gamers are misanthropic, maladjusted blights on society (giving about a half-dozen examples to support the idea that all gamers are pariahs) and that you swearing off gaming entirely… …get soundly lambasted by everyone who replies to the […]
Deb’s Historical Research Page Just a really good tool to have a link to. Via Population: One.
WISH 61: Characters for Other People Come up with a character concept for one to three other gamers you know. System, genre, stats (if you even bother with stats) up to you. How did the gamer(s) influence the concept(s) you came up with? Would you play the character(s) you came up with yourself?
Just seems as though this should be useful at some point: a timeline of natural and man-made disasters throughout history.
Some great notes on pulp adventure campaign that the GM has just started up. Great fun. I’ve gone into some detail here, because, well, I’m dead proud of it, and because I’ve not done such extreme scene-framing before. The whole of the early section was a way of saying “This is the sort of bizarre […]
Population: One: Monday Mashup #5: Fantastic Four I don’t believe I’ve ever read any Fantastic Four of any kind, so I’ll have to go with my general impressions.
Roll the Bones: Role Call 28: Unusual settings What’s the most unusual setting in which your game has been set, and what makes it so unusual?
Having finally had a chance to play through some Spycraft stuff, I can finally see what people have been saying — the combat system changes take it head-and-shoulders above the standard d20 combat system. Fluid, smooth, and much more intuitive to a non-tactically-thinking gamer, they literally made it possible to ‘do what the guys in […]
Without prelude or explanation, my Spycraft character.
Saw the trailer for Underworld tonight when we went to S.W.A.T. I’d been using pictures of Kate Beckinsdale for Jackie’s high-Aspect character in Nobilis. After seeing the trailer, Jackie could only grin and nod her head approvingly. I’d say I picked well. Movie looks cool, too.
