Nope, the Ning.com site wasn’t working for me — not well enough anyway.
So, I’m back over here where I should be – transferred entirely to WordPress – and working on adding the stuff to this wordpress-based site that I wanted out of the Ning – a forum and better ways to have a conversation. More info as I create it.
Oooooh, pretty!
Sorry Ning didn’t work out.
Not sure about the forum setup, but some ideas that would work in that same context:
1. Allowing registered users the ability to create posts. There’s some granularity there, and that would, in theory, allow for some forum-like thread-generation.
I think you can even set it up to let people create/edit their own posts, but have them all require your moderation before they get posted.
2. WP 2.7 (at least), and some themes, supported threaded comments (comments on a given comment, with indentation and the whole schmear). I haven’t gotten it to work yet, but it’s also something forumish.
Dice! Multiple dice! Cool!
Hmm. I see what you mean about the threaded comments as a means for a better conversation. I’ll have to think about the ‘everyone can post’ thing. Hmm. Food for thought.
It doesn’t have to be everyone — it can be whomever you select to be so privileged. 🙂
Oooh … more pretty dice.
I think I have the replies set up, but the threading doesn’t appear to be happening. I mean, I’m expecting indentations of ‘children’ replies under the ‘parents’, and I’m not seeing that. Hmm.
Okay, clicked on an earlier “Reply to doycet,” and let’s see …
And … not showing any threading.
Hrm.
As I said, I haven’t gotten it to work myself. I does require a theme that supports it (mine supposedly does), but I’m not sure what else needs to be done to activate it. A research project, to be sure.
A (small) example of where it does work.
And that example: http://www.buzzmachine.com/2009/03/20/nickel-and-dimed-to-death/
Actually, now that I look at it, it’s working on mine. It’s just the indentation is very slight. I need to poke into that.
